One little girl & 4 ducks = a little life lesson
So, we decided to get our daughter a few ducks ..... She loves the chickens and rabbits, and we knew she would be entertained with the ducks as she always loves to watch them at the park ..... My brother agreed to go to an animal swap for me (I had to go milk cows for a farmer that morning and couldn't make it) and he would find us some ducks ...... I trusted he would pick out some nice ducks because he had ducks and geese when he was a kid ... I reminded him to only get 3 or 4 . We just wanted a few. I also told him I really would like some Cayuga's ..... they are my favorite duck with their shiny, iridescent, greenish, purplish tinted black feathers.. Well, it was a sunny Saturday, as nice of a day as it can be for March, and my brother arrived with the pet taxi in tow and 4 adult Cayuga ducks inside.. They were quacking and pretty scared as we let them out into their new pen on the lawn next to the dog kennel... I had feed for them all ready and a round rubber tub that holds 3 gallons of water .. It took them awhile to calm down and start enjoying their new surroundings, but pretty soon they were snapping up small bits of grass and eating their grain, and their favorite thing, drinking and splashing in the tub of water. All this this time my daughter was watching them and laughing and all happy.... I guess it never occurred to me (even though it should have as I was raised on the farm) that it is spring time and the pairs of ducks might be mating. As we were standing there watching the ducks, each male decided that it was time to mate with their female partner. My daughter (she is 3 1/2) watched in horror as her eyes got all teary and she started to cry. She was sobbing and telling me I needed to go in there and stop the big ducks from eating the other ducks ... So I explained to her that it is spring time and the male ducks are breeding the female ducks and then their eggs get fertilized and that is how baby ducklings come about ... She still wasn't happy about the whole event, but once she understood that the ducks weren't trying to kill each other, she felt better. I told her I was surprised too as I didn't know they were going to do that either. I guess we both learned something about ducks ....
